Flame (焰) for Wind Orchestra
(please purchase from Star Music Publishing)
Free
Grade 4 | ca. 7'
The music portrays diverse colors and varying states of flame—dim to bright, warm to hot, static to vigorous. It opens with the “flame motif” sustained in the middle register, gradually becoming bright and animated until reaching a majestic passage at the center. After a section of galloping winds against a weighty motif beneath, the piece ends brilliantly with the flame motif clustering at the top, as if the flame will never be extinguished. Originally, this piece was composed for organ solo in 2001.
